Overview

A total of €5,922bn will be spent on Science, Technology and Innovation over the course of the National Development Plan 2007 – 2013. €641m (11%) is allocated to the Agri-Food Research Programme.
Business expenditure on R&D (BERD) by the Food and Drink Industry was €63.7 million in 2005 according to Forfas. There are 1,085 research personnel employed in the sector and research activity breaks down as follows:
Basic Research – 13.7%
Applied Research – 29.4%
Experimental Research – 56.9%

Overall Industry Objectives on R&D
· R&D activity must align itself with the needs of the food and drink sector.
· Strategic Research Agendas developed by industry and agreed with research community.
· Efficient transfer of IP from research community to industry.
· Efficient technology transfer programme.
· Level 9 & 10 graduate skills-base attractive to industry.
