Overview
A total of €5,922bn will be spent on Science, Technology and Innovation over the course of the National Development Plan 2007 – 2013. €641m (11%) is allocated to the Agri-Food Research Programme.
Business expenditure on R&D (BERD) by the Food and Drink Industry was €63.7 million in 2005 according to Forfas. There are 1,085 research personnel employed in the sector and research activity breaks down as follows:
Basic Research – 13.7%
Applied Research – 29.4%
Experimental Research – 56.9%

R&D activity must align itself with the needs of the food and drink sector.

Strategic Research Agendas developed by industry and agreed with research community.

Efficient transfer of IP from research community to industry.
·
Efficient technology transfer programme.
·
Level 9 & 10 graduate skills-base attractive to industry.
